Can swimmer's ear occur without pain?

Pain is not required for inflammation of the outer ear canal. Early irritation may mainly cause itching, a blocked sensation, dampness, or a change in hearing. Symptoms can also be mild in people who notice the problem quickly. On the other hand, painless discharge or hearing change may come from wax, eczema, a foreign object, or a deeper ear problem. The absence of pain therefore does not establish the diagnosis or show that the ear needs no care.

Keep water out of the ear and stop using cotton swabs or earbuds until the cause is clear. Wipe the outer ear only.
