What should swimmer's ear look like?

The inflammation is usually inside the canal, so it may be difficult to see without an otoscope. The entrance can look red, flaky, damp, or narrowed by swelling. There may be clear or cloudy fluid, crusting, or tenderness when the small flap at the front of the ear is pressed. These findings can overlap with eczema, contact irritation, wax problems, or infection deeper in the ear. A photograph or mirror check cannot reliably distinguish them.

Keep the ear dry and avoid swimming while it is irritated. Do not insert cotton swabs, hairpins, fingers, or home mixtures to clean it. Gently wipe the outer ear only. If swelling, discharge, or discomfort is present, arrange a GP Consultation so the canal and eardrum can be examined. Use prescribed drops exactly as directed and ask how to position your head when applying them.

Get medical advice if the ear becomes increasingly red, swollen, painful, or wet, or if hearing becomes muffled. Seek urgent help for severe pain, dizziness, facial weakness, fever, or redness spreading around the ear. Earlier assessment is sensible for people with diabetes or a weakened immune system. Ask whether the changes are in the outer canal or behind the eardrum, whether the canal needs cleaning, and which water precautions apply. Mention recent swimming, scratching, earbuds, and skin allergies.
