Ear cleaning with swimmer's ear

Swimmer's ear affects the sensitive skin lining the outer ear canal. Cotton buds, fingernails, and improvised tools can make tiny scratches, push debris inward, and remove protective wax. Water trapped after cleaning may add further irritation. Discharge or narrowing can sometimes prevent drops from reaching the skin, which is when a clinician may need to inspect and clean the canal.

Wipe only the outer ear with a clean, soft cloth and keep water out during bathing. Let the canal dry naturally; do not blow hot air into it. Pause swimming and avoid in-ear devices while symptoms remain. Do not flush the ear or use wax drops, oil, or antiseptic solutions unless a clinician confirms they are appropriate, especially if an eardrum problem is possible.

Arrange a GP consultation if discharge blocks the canal, prescribed drops cannot enter, pain is worsening, or hearing remains muffled. Seek urgent care for spreading swelling, severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe illness, or severe pain with diabetes or reduced immunity.
