The infection in the ear canal

Swimmer's ear, or otitis externa, is an inflammation of the skin lining the outer ear canal. Water left in the canal can soften the skin, while scratching or cleaning can create tiny breaks. Bacteria may then grow in that environment. The condition is different from an infection deeper behind the eardrum, so examination helps guide treatment.

Reducing irritation while it heals

Keep the ear dry and avoid swimming until a clinician says it is reasonable to return. Do not scratch, probe, or flush the canal. A clinician may prescribe antibacterial ear drops, sometimes with medicine to reduce swelling; use them for the advised duration. Pain relief may help if it is safe for you. Do not share leftover drops or use someone else's prescription.

When an examination matters

Book a GP consultation for worsening pain, pus-like discharge, reduced hearing, or symptoms that are not settling. Get urgent medical help if redness or swelling extends beyond the ear, you feel very unwell, or severe pain occurs with diabetes or reduced immunity.
