Swelling of feet after normal delivery

Short answer
Swelling in both feet after a vaginal delivery is often caused by pregnancy fluid, intravenous fluids, and reduced movement, but sudden or one-sided swelling needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common pattern
- Both feet or ankles may become puffy after birth.
- Useful observation
- Compare sides and note pain, warmth, redness, or rapid change.
What the swelling can mean
During pregnancy, the body holds extra fluid. After birth, that fluid moves back into the circulation and leaves through urine and sweat, so the ankles and feet may look puffy for a short time. Fluids given during labour can add to this effect. Sitting or standing for long periods may make it more noticeable.
Normal recovery swelling is usually on both sides and does not come with severe pain, redness, or breathing trouble. A clot in a leg can cause swelling, warmth, tenderness, or colour change on one side, so the pattern matters more than the label of normal delivery.
Comfort measures at home
Rest with your feet raised on pillows, change position regularly, and take gentle walks if your maternity team says movement is suitable. Avoid tight socks or footwear. Drink to thirst and continue prescribed medicines; do not start water tablets or herbal remedies without advice. A cool compress may ease discomfort, while firm massage should be avoided if one leg is painful or unusually swollen.
When to seek care
Contact your maternity team promptly if swelling is rapidly increasing, affects one leg more than the other, or comes with calf pain, warmth, redness, fever, severe headache, vision changes, or high blood pressure. Seek emergency help for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, coughing blood, fainting, or marked weakness. These symptoms can signal a clot or a blood-pressure complication after birth.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your swelling pattern needs a blood-pressure check, whether your medicines or labour fluids could contribute, and how much walking is appropriate while you recover. Mention any pain, skin colour change, headache, or breathlessness. If feeding is difficult, a Lactation Consultation may help with positioning and early feeding concerns.

Questions people ask
How can I reduce foot swelling after vaginal birth?
Raise your feet, change position, take gentle walks when advised, and avoid tight footwear.
Is swelling in one foot after delivery different?
Yes. One-sided swelling, especially with pain, warmth, or redness, needs prompt assessment for a possible clot.
