Swelling above the knee after exercise: what to know

Short answer
Swelling above the knee after exercise can reflect irritation, fluid in or around the joint, or an injury that needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Track
- Onset, trigger, warmth, range of motion, and weight-bearing.
- Avoid
- Training through increasing swelling or sharp pain.
What it may mean
The location and timing matter. A gradual fullness after repeated bending or running may come from an irritated tendon, bursa, or knee lining. A sudden swelling after a twist, pop, or impact can occur with internal injury, including an ACL tear or meniscus tear. Conditions such as knee osteoarthritis, knee bursitis, gout, or a Baker's cyst can also cause swelling, although the pattern and examination differ.
Swelling above the kneecap does not identify one diagnosis by itself. A clinician may compare both knees, check movement and stability, and decide whether imaging or joint aspiration is appropriate.
What you can do now
Pause the activity that triggered the swelling and use relative rest. Keep the leg raised when resting, and apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth for short periods. Avoid placing ice directly on skin or forcing a painful stretch. Gentle, comfortable movement can reduce stiffness, but return to running, jumping, or heavy squats only as symptoms settle.
Arrange an assessment if the swelling persists, returns with exercise, or limits walking, bending, or sleep. Note what activity preceded it, whether the knee felt unstable, and whether the swelling appeared immediately or later.
When to seek care
Seek urgent medical care for severe pain, an obvious deformity, inability to bear weight, a hot red joint with fever, or sudden calf swelling with breathlessness or chest pain. Prompt assessment is also sensible after a significant impact, a locking knee, or a knee that repeatedly gives way.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the swelling is inside the knee or in the tissues above it, which activities should be paused, and whether you need an examination, imaging, or fluid testing. Ask when a graded return to exercise is appropriate.

Questions people ask
Can I exercise with swelling above my knee?
Choose comfortable low-load movement only if it does not increase pain or swelling, and pause the triggering activity until the cause is clearer.
Does swelling always mean a serious knee injury?
No. Irritation can cause swelling, but persistent, sudden, or function-limiting swelling deserves clinical assessment.
