Short answer

Sweaty hands and feet in cold weather can result from temperature regulation, stress, or excess sweating, but persistent changes should be assessed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common contributors
Temperature changes, stress, enclosed footwear, and excessive sweating.
Track
Both sides, triggers, colour, numbness, pain, and skin changes.
Urgent sign
Sudden one-sided coldness, colour change, numbness, or severe pain.

Why cold skin can still sweat

Cold causes blood vessels near the skin to narrow, so hands and feet may feel cool even while sweat glands remain active. Gloves, socks, exercise, anxiety, or moving between indoor and outdoor temperatures can add moisture. Some people have excessive sweating that affects the palms or soles regardless of weather.

Consider whether both sides are affected and whether the pattern is new. Fatigue, breathlessness, pale skin, weight change, constipation, or feeling unusually cold can point to a problem such as anaemia, iron deficiency, or an underactive thyroid. Pain, colour change, or slow-healing skin on one foot needs a different assessment.

Practical steps

Keep hands and feet warm and dry with breathable layers. Change damp socks, dry carefully between the toes, and choose shoes that allow air movement. Avoid applying strong products to broken or irritated skin. Note triggers, colour changes, numbness, pain, and whether symptoms stop indoors.

Do not start iron tablets solely because your hands or feet feel cold or sweaty. A clinician can decide whether blood tests or a circulation check is appropriate before treatment.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for a hand or foot that becomes suddenly pale, blue, very painful, numb, or cold, especially on one side. Get prompt care for a wound that is not healing, spreading redness, or severe swelling.

Arrange an appointment if sweating is new, disrupts sleep or daily activities, occurs with palpitations or unexplained weight change, or persists despite keeping warm and dry. A clinician may review medicines, thyroid symptoms, blood counts, and circulation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could my medicines or another condition be contributing? Do I need tests for anaemia, iron deficiency, or thyroid function? Are my circulation and skin healthy? What is safe to use for sweating if my skin is sensitive?

Questions people ask

Why do my feet sweat when they are cold?

Cold skin and active sweat glands can occur together because surface blood flow and sweating are controlled by different responses.

Should I take iron for cold, sweaty hands?

Only after a clinician has assessed you and confirmed that iron deficiency is present or likely. Unneeded supplements can cause harm.
