What should you know about sweaty arms and feet?

Short answer

Sweaty arms and feet may be a response to heat or activity, but persistent or new sweating should be assessed alongside skin and general symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the pattern

Arms can sweat when the body is cooling itself, while the soles may stay damp because they contain many sweat glands and are enclosed in shoes. Sweating linked to exercise, warm weather or nervousness often settles after the trigger passes. A recurring pattern that interferes with writing, handling objects, walking or footwear may fit excessive sweating. Look for whether the arms and feet are affected equally, whether the change is recent, and whether sweating happens during sleep. Itch, peeling or scaling on the feet can suggest Athlete's Foot rather than sweating alone.

Ways to manage it

Use breathable clothing and footwear, change damp socks, and dry the feet carefully after washing. Keep a brief record of heat, exercise, stress, meals, medicines and timing so useful patterns are visible. A clinician may recommend a Prescription Antiperspirant for selected areas. Iontophoresis is a treatment option for persistent sweating of the feet and may be discussed when routine measures are insufficient. Do not apply products to broken or inflamed skin without advice, especially if the soles are cracked or peeling.

When to seek medical care

Book an appointment if sweating is new, steadily increasing, widespread, present during sleep or affecting daily activities. Seek prompt care for fainting, chest discomfort, severe breathlessness, confusion, fever or sudden profound weakness with sweating. Foot pain, spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus or open cracks also need assessment. These warning signs are reasons to seek care because of the symptom combination, not because sweating alone identifies a particular diagnosis.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the distribution suggests a primary sweating problem, skin infection or another cause; which tests, if any, are useful; and which treatment suits your arms versus your feet. Explain when it started and what activities or medicines change it.
