Short answer

Sweating during fever often happens as the body releases heat while its temperature comes down, but heavy or persistent sweating can also contribute to dehydration.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common pattern
Sweating may occur as the body releases heat during a falling fever.
Main concern
Heavy sweating can add to fluid loss and dehydration.
Monitor
Temperature, drinking, urination, alertness, and breathing.

What sweating can mean

The body may raise its internal temperature during an infection, then sweat when the temperature set point shifts back toward normal. Chills can occur before this change, followed by warmth and damp skin. Sweating itself does not identify the cause of a fever. Respiratory infections such as the Common Cold or COVID-19 can include fever, while skin inflammation, a urinary infection, or another illness may also be responsible.

Pay attention to the overall pattern: how long the fever lasts, whether it returns, and whether there are symptoms such as cough, sore throat, rash, pain, vomiting, or unusual tiredness. A fever that improves after sweating is not proof that the underlying illness has ended.

What to do while you are sweating

Rest in a comfortably cool room and wear light, breathable clothing. Drink small, frequent amounts of water; soup or an oral rehydration drink may help if you have lost a lot of fluid. Use urine colour, thirst, dry mouth, and dizziness as practical clues about hydration. Change damp clothing or bedding so you do not become chilled. Avoid ice-cold baths, heavy blankets, and strenuous activity while you feel unwell.

Check your temperature with a reliable thermometer and follow the label directions for any fever medicine you use. Do not give aspirin to children or teenagers unless a clinician has specifically advised it. Keep infants, older adults, and people with long-term conditions under closer observation because dehydration can develop more quickly.

When to seek medical care

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, confusion, fainting, a seizure, severe weakness, a stiff neck, a severe headache, blue or grey lips, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Prompt assessment is also needed if you cannot keep fluids down, pass very little urine, become increasingly drowsy, or show signs of significant dehydration.

Contact a clinician when fever persists, repeatedly returns, or occurs in a young infant. Arrange advice sooner if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or managing a serious long-term illness. The combination of fever with a worsening cough, chest pain, or breathing difficulty may need assessment for an infection such as Acute Bronchitis.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may be causing the fever, how often to check your temperature, and which fluids or medicines are suitable for your age and health. Tell the clinician when the sweating began, whether it follows chills, how much you are drinking and urinating, and any new rash, cough, pain, or vomiting. Mention recent travel, contact with someone who was ill, and medicines that can affect body temperature.

Questions people ask

Is sweating a sign that a fever is breaking?

It can happen when body temperature is returning toward normal, but sweating does not confirm that the illness has resolved. Continue monitoring your symptoms and hydration.

Should I stop myself from sweating during a fever?

No. Keep the room comfortable, avoid excessive blankets, replace lost fluids, and change damp clothing. Do not use ice-cold water, which can trigger shivering.

When is sweating with fever concerning?

Get prompt medical advice for persistent or returning fever, worsening symptoms, inability to drink, very little urine, increasing drowsiness, breathing difficulty, or other urgent warning signs.
