SVC syndrome and lung cancer

The superior vena cava is the main vein carrying blood from the head, neck, arms and upper chest to the heart. A lung tumour or nearby lymph nodes may press on it. This can raise pressure in the veins above the narrowed area. Possible symptoms include facial or neck swelling, swollen arms, prominent chest veins, headache, cough, breathlessness or a hoarse voice. Symptoms may be gradual, although a sudden change needs urgent attention.

SVC syndrome is a clinical pattern, not a cancer stage by itself. Doctors may use chest imaging and other tests to identify the obstruction, understand the lung cancer, and check whether treatment choices depend on tumour features or spread. The plan may involve cancer-directed treatment and measures to improve comfort or blood flow.

Report new or worsening symptoms to the oncology team promptly. Keep a record of swelling, breathing, headaches, voice changes and the positions that make them better or worse. Rest with the upper body raised if comfortable, and follow prescribed medicines carefully. Your team may discuss radiotherapy, chemotherapy, a stent or another approach depending on the obstruction and the cancer's characteristics. Supportive care can help manage breathlessness, discomfort and practical needs alongside treatment.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, blue lips, inability to stay awake, sudden weakness or rapidly increasing swelling of the face and neck. A severe headache with vomiting or a change in vision also needs urgent assessment. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or confused.

Ask what is causing the obstruction, how urgently it needs treatment, and whether imaging or tumour profiling will guide the plan. Ask about the expected purpose and side effects of radiotherapy, chemotherapy or a stent, how symptoms will be monitored, and who to contact overnight.
