What should you know about surgical skin graft?

A surgeon removes skin from a donor site and places it over the wound. The graft may be thin or thicker depending on the depth, location, and purpose of repair. It does not contain its own blood supply at first, so the wound bed must be prepared carefully and the graft held still while small blood vessels connect with it. The donor area is dressed as it heals. Grafting can help protect exposed tissue, support healing after injury or surgery, and improve coverage when direct closure would place too much tension on the surrounding skin.

Before treatment, tell the surgical team about medicines, allergies, smoking, diabetes, and any previous problems with wound healing. Follow instructions about washing, eating, and medicines. Afterward, keep both dressings protected and avoid stretching, rubbing, or soaking the treated area until you receive clearance. Attend dressing changes so the graft and donor site can be checked. Healing time varies by graft size and location; the new skin may look different in colour or texture while it settles. Sun protection after healing can help reduce colour contrast.

Contact your surgical team promptly if the dressing becomes soaked with blood, the graft shifts, pain suddenly worsens, or the area develops increasing warmth, swelling, pus, or spreading redness. Fever, an unpleasant smell, or darkening skin also needs prompt assessment. Do not remove a firmly attached dressing or apply creams beneath it unless your team has instructed you. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding that does not settle with gentle pressure or for symptoms of a severe allergic reaction.

Ask where the donor skin will come from, how the graft will be secured, what movement to limit, and when dressings can be changed. Clarify how scars may look at both sites, which pain relief is suitable, and which changes should trigger a same-day call.
