What should you know about surgical bowel resection?

The surgeon removes the planned bowel segment and nearby tissue when required for the cancer operation. The remaining ends may be joined, a process called an anastomosis. If joining them immediately would not be suitable, bowel can be brought through the abdominal wall as a stoma, allowing waste to leave into a pouch. A stoma may be temporary or lasting, depending on the operation and healing needs.

The approach may be open or minimally invasive. Beforehand, the team discusses the intended extent of surgery, possible changes to bowel function and whether lymph nodes or other tissue will be examined. The final pathology helps guide further treatment planning.

Follow instructions about eating, drinking, bowel preparation and medicines. Tell the team about blood thinners, diabetes treatment and previous abdominal surgery. Afterward, walking as advised, breathing exercises and gradual food progression can support recovery. Keep the incision or stoma area clean as instructed, record bowel changes and attend the planned review. A stoma nurse can teach pouch care and help with fit, skin protection and daily routines.

Call the surgical team for increasing abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, persistent vomiting, fever, wound redness or drainage, or a sudden change in stoma colour or output. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pain with faintness, heavy bleeding, severe breathlessness or inability to keep fluids down. Do not wait for a routine appointment when symptoms are rapidly worsening.
