What should you know about surgical bandage for stitches?

Short answer

A surgical bandage protects stitches from rubbing and contamination; keep it clean and follow the clinician’s instructions for changing or removing it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Purpose
Protect stitches while the wound starts healing
Keep in mind
Hand hygiene and the clinician’s dressing instructions
Watch for
Spreading redness, pus, wound opening or uncontrolled bleeding

What the bandage does

A dressing over stitches can absorb small amounts of fluid, reduce rubbing and provide a barrier while the wound edges join. The type and duration depend on the wound location, depth, drainage and the material used for the sutures. Some wounds need a dry covering, while others may be managed differently after the initial period.

Mild tenderness, tightness or a small amount of staining can occur after suturing. Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain, pus or separation of the wound is different and should be assessed. Lidocaine may be used during wound suturing to numb the area; it does not replace aftercare.

How to care for it

Keep the bandage clean and dry unless your clinician gave different instructions. Wash your hands before touching the dressing, and do not pull at stitches, scabs or adhesive strips. If the dressing becomes wet, dirty, loose or soaked, ask how it should be replaced; use the wound-care instructions provided rather than applying household products.

Avoid activities that stretch or strike the wound. Attend the planned review so the clinician can check healing and remove non-dissolving sutures at the appropriate time. Ask whether your tetanus vaccination needs checking, especially after a dirty or contaminated injury.

When to seek care

Seek prompt medical help for bleeding that does not stop with steady pressure, wound edges that open, spreading redness, worsening pain, pus, fever, numbness, or reduced movement near the injury. Urgent care is needed for heavy bleeding, a deep wound, or a wound caused by a bite or a contaminated object.

Questions for your doctor

Ask when to change or remove the dressing, how much moisture is acceptable, when the stitches need review, which activities to avoid, and what signs indicate infection. Confirm whether you need tetanus protection and where to seek help outside clinic hours.

Questions people ask

Can I remove the bandage over stitches myself?

Only if your clinician has told you when and how to do so. The timing depends on the wound and dressing.

What if the dressing gets wet?

Follow the wound-care instructions and contact the treating clinic if you are unsure how to replace it or the wound is soaked.
