Supra-trochanteric bursitis: support and treatment

How the structures involved in Trochanteric Bursitis differ from normal

Short answer

Supra-trochanteric bursitis causes pain and tenderness over the outer hip when the bursa becomes irritated by pressure, friction or repeated loading.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical location
The outer side of the hip
Common aggravators
Side-lying, stairs, hills and repeated loading

What it means

A bursa is a small, fluid-filled cushion that helps tissues move over one another. The bursa near the greater trochanter sits on the outside of the hip. Irritation can produce aching or sharp lateral hip pain, tenderness when lying on that side, and discomfort on stairs, hills or longer walks. Greater trochanteric pain syndrome can also involve the gluteal tendons, so the label is not always the whole explanation.

A clinician may assess hip movement, walking pattern, nearby muscles and the lower back. Symptoms may overlap with other causes of hip pain, and the examination helps guide the next step.

Ways to settle irritation

Reduce direct pressure on the sore side and avoid crossing the legs or lying on the painful hip if those positions trigger symptoms. A pillow between the knees may make side-lying more comfortable. Temporarily shorten walks, avoid steep hills, and return to activity as pain allows rather than pushing through a flare.

Physiotherapy can address hip strength, pelvic control and movement habits with a graded programme. A clinician may discuss a cortisone injection for selected cases. Shockwave therapy is another option that may be considered after assessment, especially when symptoms persist despite rehabilitation.

When to seek care

Arrange care if outer-hip pain is persistent, interrupts sleep, changes your walking, or follows a fall. Seek prompt attention for fever, a hot or visibly swollen hip, severe pain after injury, inability to bear weight, new leg weakness, or numbness affecting the limb.

Questions for your doctor

Is the bursa the main pain source, or could a tendon, joint or back problem be involved? Which movements should I modify? What strengthening plan is appropriate? When would an injection or shockwave therapy be considered?

Questions people ask

Can sleeping on the painful side worsen bursitis?

Direct pressure can irritate the tissues over the outer hip, so changing position may reduce night discomfort.

Should I stop all exercise?

Usually, activity is adjusted rather than abandoned; low-irritation movement and graded strengthening can support recovery.
