What should you know about superficial yeast infection?

Thrush affects the vulva, vagina or both. It commonly causes irritation, burning, redness and a thick or altered discharge, although symptoms vary. Pain may be felt during urination or sex. Similar symptoms can come from bacterial imbalance, skin irritation or a sexually transmitted infection, so symptoms alone cannot confirm thrush.

A clinician may examine the area and take a swab when symptoms are unusual, severe, recurring or not improving. Mention pregnancy, diabetes, recent antibiotics and any medicines you use because these details can affect the assessment.

Keep the area dry, wash gently with water or an unscented cleanser, and avoid douching, scented products and tight clothing while irritated.
