What should you know about superficial spreading malignant melanoma?

This melanoma pattern tends to extend across the surface of the skin before it develops a deeper vertical component. It may show an uneven border, several colours, asymmetry, or a change in an existing mole. Pigment can be brown or black, but it may also include pink, red, blue, grey, or white areas.

Emergency assessment is needed for uncontrolled bleeding or sudden severe symptoms such as weakness, confusion, seizures, or a new intense headache. These symptoms can have causes unrelated to melanoma, but sudden neurological change should never wait for a routine skin appointment.

Ask what the biopsy shows, how deep the melanoma is, whether the margins are clear, and whether lymph-node assessment is advised. Discuss sun protection, self-check technique, follow-up timing, warning signs between visits, and whether close relatives need advice about skin checks.
