What should you know about superficial lump on neck?

A neck lump may be an enlarged lymph node reacting to infection, a thyroid nodule, a cyst, a salivary-gland problem, or another growth. Head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, and cancer of unknown primary can also present with a neck mass. The lump's location, texture, mobility, duration, and associated symptoms help guide evaluation, but none of these features alone confirms its cause.

A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, skin, ears, thyroid, and lymph-node areas. Ultrasound, other imaging, or a needle sample may be recommended depending on the findings.

Book an appointment if the lump persists, grows, feels hard or fixed, or returns after an infection. Note when it appeared, whether it changes with illness, and whether you have hoarseness, swallowing trouble, ear pain, fever, or unexplained weight change. Do not repeatedly press or massage the area, which can make tenderness harder to judge.
