The rash may be limited to sun-exposed areas such as the face, neck, arms, or chest, although covered skin can sometimes react when a medicine or product makes skin more light-sensitive. Small bumps, redness, itching, or blister-like changes can occur. Sun exposure can also aggravate inflammatory conditions. A rash is a symptom, so its appearance alone cannot identify the cause; contact dermatitis, heat rash, drug rash, psoriasis, and other conditions can look similar.

Move out of direct sunlight, cover the affected area with loose clothing, and use shade while the skin settles. Avoid new fragrances, cosmetics, and harsh cleansers on the rash. Keep a note of medicines, supplements, and topical products used before the reaction, because some can increase light sensitivity. Do not scratch blisters or apply a strong treatment without advice. Arrange medical advice if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returns after light exposure, forms blisters, or does not improve after avoiding sun.
