Sunburn under the eyes: treatment and safety

The skin beneath the eyes is thin and easily irritated. [Skin Redness](/symptoms/skin-redness/) and puffiness may follow ultraviolet exposure, while watering or light sensitivity can suggest that the eye surface was also affected. Blisters, crusting or [Peeling Skin](/symptoms/skin-peeling/) close to the eyelid deserve extra caution. Move into shade or indoors and place a cool, clean damp cloth over closed eyelids for short periods. Do not put ice directly on the skin, rub the eyes, use exfoliants, fragranced creams, essential oils or unlabelled steroid products. Keep moisturiser away from the eye surface; a clinician or pharmacist can advise whether a bland [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) product is suitable for the surrounding skin. Wear a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses outdoors, and avoid contact lenses if the eyes are uncomfortable.

Seek urgent eye care for eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, pronounced light sensitivity, difficulty opening the eye, severe swelling, or a feeling that something is in the eye. Obtain prompt medical advice for blisters on the eyelid, spreading redness, pus, fever, or worsening pain. Do not use [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) near the eyes unless specifically prescribed.

Ask whether the eyelid skin or the eye surface is involved, which product is safe near the eyes, and whether you need an eye examination. Mention contact lens use, vision symptoms, blistering and any product already applied.
