Sunburn spots on the face: what to know

A fresh burn can cause patchy redness, warmth, tenderness and later peeling. As inflammation settles, some areas may look darker or lighter than nearby skin. This colour change can linger after the discomfort improves, especially when the face receives more ultraviolet exposure during healing. Facial spots are not automatically a sign of infection or a serious disease, but a mark that is new, repeatedly crusted, bleeding or changing deserves a clinician’s view.

Move out of direct sun, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed, and add a hat or shade. Cool the skin with a clean, damp cloth; avoid ice directly on the face. Apply a bland moisturiser without fragrance, and do not scrub, peel flakes, or use strong acids, retinoids or bleaching products on tender skin. Let the surface recover before considering cosmetic treatments.

Seek urgent medical help for facial swelling affecting the eyes or breathing, confusion, faintness, severe headache, repeated vomiting, or signs of dehydration. Arrange prompt assessment for extensive blistering, severe pain, fever, pus, spreading warmth, or eye pain or vision change. Ask whether the spots fit post-burn pigment change, whether any lesion needs examination, and which facial products are suitable while the barrier heals. Mention your sun exposure, blistering, medicines and any history of pigment changes.
