Sunburn protection

Short answer
Sunburn protection works best when shade, protective clothing and correctly applied sunscreen are used together and reapplied after exposure to water.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Use together
- Shade, clothing and sunscreen
- Reapply
- After swimming, sweating or towelling
- Cover often missed areas
- Ears, neck, scalp partings and feet
Why protection matters
Ultraviolet light can injure skin before a person notices heat or redness. A previous [Sunburn](/conditions/sunburn/) does not make the skin resistant to another one. Repeated exposure contributes to [Sun-Damaged Skin](/conditions/photoaging/), while recently burned or peeling skin is especially easy to irritate.
Build a protection routine
Plan outdoor time around shade where practical. Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, closely woven clothing and footwear that covers exposed skin. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to uncovered areas before going outside, following the product label for amount and reapplication. Reapply after swimming, sweating or towelling, even when the product is water resistant. Protect ears, neck, scalp partings, hands and the tops of feet. Keep infants and young children in shade and clothing, and ask a clinician about suitable products for sensitive or recently injured skin.
When to seek care
Protection cannot replace assessment of a serious burn. Seek advice for extensive blistering, severe pain, spreading [Skin Redness](/symptoms/skin-redness/), fever, pus, dizziness, vomiting, confusion or difficulty drinking. Eye pain or vision changes after sun exposure need prompt attention. Do not apply sunscreen over open blisters without clinical guidance.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which protective clothing and sunscreen suit your skin, whether a medicine increases sun sensitivity, and how long to wait before exposing peeling skin to outdoor light.

Questions people ask
Can sunscreen alone prevent every sunburn?
No product replaces shade and clothing. Application can be missed or removed by water and friction, so combine methods.
Should you protect peeling skin from sun?
Yes. Keep it covered with clothing and shade while it heals, and follow clinical advice about applying products to tender or broken areas.
