Sunburn peeling: what to know and do

Short answer
Sunburn peeling usually reflects damaged surface skin shedding as the skin repairs itself, so moisturise gently and do not pull it away.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What peeling means
Ultraviolet exposure injures skin cells. Redness, warmth, tenderness and later flaking can follow; peeling is the body removing cells that were too damaged to continue normally. The loose skin may look white, brown or translucent, depending on your skin tone and how dry the area is. See the related guide to [Peeling Skin](/symptoms/skin-peeling/) and the overview of [Sunburn](/conditions/sunburn/).
How to care for peeling skin
Use cool, damp compresses for comfort, then pat dry. Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser or an [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) product while the skin is slightly damp. Leave flakes in place rather than scrubbing, shaving over them or using exfoliating acids. Drink fluids, wear loose clothing, and keep the area out of further sun with clothing and shade. Do not open blisters; protect them with a clean, non-stick covering if needed.
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice for extensive blistering, worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, marked swelling, dizziness, vomiting or confusion. Eye pain or vision change after facial sun exposure needs prompt assessment. A child, older adult or person with a weakened immune system may need earlier advice, especially when the burn covers a large area.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the peeling pattern fits the depth of the burn, which moisturiser suits your skin, and whether any medicine should be paused until the barrier recovers. Ask how to protect newly healed skin from another burn.

Questions people ask
Should you peel sunburned skin off?
No. Pulling it can expose tender skin and create small breaks that become irritated or infected. Let it detach naturally.
Can moisturiser help sunburn peeling?
A gentle, fragrance-free emollient can reduce dryness and friction. Stop a product that stings or causes a new rash.
