Sunburn at the beach: what to know

Short answer
A beach sunburn can worsen after exposure ends, so leave the sun, cool the skin, replace fluids, and watch for severe symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- Leave direct sun and cool the skin
- Hydration
- Drink fluids regularly
- Protect
- Use loose clothing and shade while healing
What beach exposure changes
Sand and water reflect ultraviolet light, and swimming can wash away protective products. Heat may add to discomfort and fluid loss. Redness, tenderness, warmth, peeling, and blisters can appear or intensify later. The burn can affect skin that did not feel hot while you were outside, particularly on the shoulders, back, chest, face, and legs.
What to do after the beach
Go indoors or into shade, take a cool shower, and drink fluids regularly. Wear loose clothing and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser to intact skin. Do not pop blisters or pull away peeling skin. Keep the affected area covered from more sun until healed. When to seek care
Get prompt medical help for extensive blistering, severe pain, faintness, confusion, repeated vomiting, fever, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Increasing warmth, swelling, pus, or red streaks can indicate infection. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or collapse. Questions for your doctor
How extensive is the burn, and do the blisters need a dressing? Which pain-relief and moisturising options fit my health conditions? When is it safe to return to swimming or outdoor activity?

Questions people ask
Why can a beach sunburn feel worse later?
Inflammation may continue after exposure, while reflected ultraviolet light and heat can add to the skin injury.
Should I swim again to cool the burn?
A cool shower is gentler. Swimming can expose burned skin to more sun, salt, or irritating chemicals.
