Sunburn on the Face: What to Know

Ultraviolet exposure inflames the skin. The face may feel tight, hot, sore, or itchy before peeling appears. A [Sunburn](/conditions/sunburn/) can also produce [Skin Redness](/symptoms/skin-redness/) and, with more severe injury, [Skin Blisters](/symptoms/skin-blisters/). Peeling is part of the surface shedding damaged cells; it is not a reason to pull the skin away. Repeated exposure can contribute to [Sun-Damaged Skin](/conditions/photoaging/).

Cool the face with a damp cloth, cleanse gently with lukewarm water, and apply a bland moisturiser such as an [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) product. Keep hydrated and avoid makeup, scrubs, retinoids, acids, fragrance, and hot water while the skin is sore. Do not pop blisters or pull [Peeling Skin](/symptoms/skin-peeling/). Stay in shade and use a hat; once the skin has recovered, use broad-spectrum sunscreen as directed.

Get prompt medical advice for extensive facial blistering, severe swelling, eye involvement, severe pain, fever, pus, spreading warmth, or difficulty drinking. Seek urgent help for confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the lips or throat. A clinician may decide whether treatments such as [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) are appropriate; do not apply prescription products around the eyes without guidance.

Ask whether the injury is superficial or blistering, which cleanser and moisturiser to use, and when to resume skincare actives. Ask how to protect against lingering color change and whether an eye or eyelid examination is needed.
