Sugar and salt solution for adults: what to know

Vomiting removes water and electrolytes. A balanced oral rehydration solution uses sugar to support intestinal absorption of sodium and water, while the salt helps replace what was lost. It is not the same as a sweetened beverage, sports drink, or an improvised mixture with guessed quantities.

Vomiting may occur with Food Poisoning, Gastroenteritis, migraine, medication effects, or other conditions. The solution supports hydration while the cause settles or is assessed; it will not remove severe pain, infection, inflammation, or an obstruction.

Follow the packet directions for a prepared product. Sip slowly and often rather than drinking a large glass at once. After vomiting, wait briefly, then restart with small sips. Once fluids stay down, try light food and continue normal medicines only as advised, because some medicines need special handling during illness.

Avoid making a concentrated drink or adding extra sugar or salt. People with kidney or heart conditions, diabetes, or a prescribed fluid limit should obtain individual advice before using a home preparation.

Seek urgent care for blood or green material in vomit, severe or localised abdominal pain, a stiff neck, confusion, fainting, chest pain, or a sudden severe headache. Get prompt assessment if repeated vomiting prevents fluids staying down, urine becomes markedly reduced, or weakness and dizziness worsen.
