Sudden weight loss and type 2 diabetes

When blood glucose remains high, the kidneys remove extra glucose in urine. This draws out fluid and can cause thirst, frequent urination, tiredness, and loss of body weight. The body may also use stored fat and muscle for energy when cells cannot access glucose properly. Type 2 Diabetes can present with these symptoms, although weight loss is not specific to it and can occur with other conditions. Prediabetes often has no clear symptoms.

Arrange prompt medical testing if weight loss comes with thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, recurrent infections, or unusual tiredness. Do not change prescribed diabetes medicines or deliberately restrict food without advice. Write down symptoms, fluid intake, medicines, home glucose readings if available, and how quickly the weight changed. A clinician may check glucose, urine, hydration, and possible complications, then discuss nutrition and treatment.

Seek emergency help for vomiting, severe abdominal pain, deep or rapid breathing, confusion, marked drowsiness, inability to keep fluids down, or worsening weakness. These symptoms may indicate a dangerous glucose or fluid imbalance. Urgent review is also appropriate for a new foot wound, spreading redness, or loss of feeling, because infection and nerve problems can worsen without obvious pain.
