Sudden Red Moles on Skin: What to Know

Cherry angiomas are small growths made of clustered blood vessels. They may appear bright red, smooth, or slightly raised and can occur on many body areas. A spot that looks like a red mole can also be an irritated mole, a bleeding lesion, or another vascular change, so colour alone cannot confirm its identity. Compare it with older photographs and note its size, border, surface, symptoms, and whether it catches on clothing.

Do not scratch, cut, tie off, or attempt to remove the spot at home. Protect it from rubbing and use sunscreen on exposed skin. Take a clear photograph beside a ruler or familiar object, without repeatedly disturbing the lesion. A dermatologist can inspect it with magnification and discuss options if it is repeatedly traumatised or cosmetically bothersome. Possible procedures include Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment or Electrosurgery, depending on the diagnosis, location, and skin characteristics.

Book a prompt skin assessment if the spot grows, changes shape or colour, develops an irregular edge, crusts, bleeds without clear injury, or becomes persistently painful or itchy. Seek urgent help for bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure. Several new lesions appearing alongside unexplained illness also warrant medical review.
