What should you know about a sudden lump between your neck and shoulder?

The area between the neck and shoulder contains lymph nodes, muscles, skin, and other tissues. A lump may follow an infection, inflammation, an injury, a cyst, or a benign growth. Neck lumps can also be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary, but the lump itself cannot identify its cause.

Note its exact position, size, tenderness, mobility, and whether the skin is red or warm. Mention sore throat, dental problems, voice change, difficulty swallowing, night sweating, fever, unexplained weight change, or a lump elsewhere. A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, neck, and thyroid and arrange imaging or a tissue sample if needed.

Book an assessment for a lump that is new, does not settle, becomes larger, feels hard or fixed, or occurs without a clear infection. Do not repeatedly press or massage it, because that can irritate the area. Record when you first noticed it and bring details of recent infections, dental treatment, injuries, medicines, and previous cancers.

If the lump is near the thyroid or affects swallowing or breathing, explain that when booking. The next step may be observation, an ultrasound or other scan, blood tests, or a biopsy depending on the examination.

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, facial or neck swelling with wheezing, or fainting. Contact a clinician promptly for a hard or enlarging lump, persistent hoarseness, coughing up blood, unexplained fever, or drenching night sweats. Urgency is guided by these warning signs, not by the presence of a lump alone.

Ask which structure the lump may involve, whether an ultrasound or biopsy is appropriate, and how soon you should receive results. If the thyroid is involved, ask what treatment options exist, including thyroid removal surgery, and what symptoms should prompt earlier contact.
