What should you know about sudden leaking of urine?

Leakage with coughing, lifting, or movement differs from a strong urge that is hard to postpone. Burning, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, cloudy urine, or fever can point toward a Urinary Tract Infection. Constipation, pregnancy, pelvic-floor weakness, excess weight, diabetes, prostate enlargement, and some medicines can also affect control. Dementia may make it harder to recognise or reach a toilet, but leaking urine has many possible explanations and needs context.

Keep drinking a normal amount unless a clinician has told you to restrict fluids, and avoid large amounts of caffeine or alcohol if they worsen urgency. Note when leaks happen, whether there is pain or fever, what you were doing, and how often you pass urine. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. A clinician may test urine, review bowel and bladder habits, and check for causes such as Type 2 Diabetes or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

Seek urgent care for inability to pass urine, new leg weakness or numbness, loss of bowel control, severe back pain, confusion, or blood in the urine. Arrange prompt assessment for fever, chills, vomiting, flank pain, or painful urination. New or repeated leakage deserves a clinical review even when it is not painful.

Ask whether the timing suggests urgency, stress leakage, infection, medication effect, or another cause. Share your bladder diary, bowel symptoms, thirst, mobility changes, pregnancy status, prostate symptoms, and any history of Obesity or Type 2 Diabetes.
