Sudden Diarrhea and Chills Without Fever

Short answer
Sudden diarrhea and chills without fever often reflect an early or mild infection, food-related illness, or fluid loss, but other causes are possible.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First priority
- Replace lost fluids with frequent small sips.
- Temperature
- No fever does not exclude an infection or dehydration.
- Monitor
- Urination, dizziness, vomiting, pain, and stool changes.
What this combination can mean
Chills can happen when the body is responding to an infection or when you are becoming dehydrated; a normal temperature does not rule out illness. Sudden loose stools may follow contaminated food, a viral stomach infection, a medication effect, or an intolerance. The pattern and accompanying symptoms matter more than one temperature reading.
Notice whether you have vomiting, cramping, blood or mucus in the stool, reduced urination, dizziness, painful urination, cough, breathing trouble, rash, or recent travel. Chills are explained further in Chills. In a person who has recently travelled or had mosquito exposure, a clinician may also consider illnesses such as Dengue Fever or Malaria. These possibilities cannot be sorted out reliably from diarrhea alone.
What to do now
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If nausea is present, small amounts spaced closely may be easier to keep down. Eat light foods when you feel able, and avoid alcohol and foods that clearly worsen the symptoms. Rest, wash your hands carefully, and avoid preparing food for other people while diarrhea continues.
Track stool frequency, fluid intake, urination, and any new symptoms. Do not start antibiotics left over from another illness. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using an anti-diarrhea medicine if you have blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, or a suspected infection.
When to seek care
Get urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, trouble breathing, cold or clammy skin, very little urine, or an inability to keep fluids down. Seek prompt assessment for blood or black stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or chills that are intense or persistent.
Contact a clinician if symptoms do not begin settling, recur, or occur in a child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a significant medical condition. Chills with urinary symptoms may point toward a Urinary Tract Infection or Kidney Infection; breathing symptoms need assessment for conditions such as Pneumonia or Influenza. Severe illness can occasionally progress to Sepsis, even without an obvious fever.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Could a recent meal, medicine, travel history, or exposure explain this? Which warning signs should make me seek urgent care? Do I need testing, and what fluids or medicines are appropriate for me? Tell the clinician when the diarrhea began, how often it occurs, whether you can drink, and what other symptoms have appeared.
