Sudden bleeding after sex: what to know

Friction, dryness, or a small surface injury can produce blood after penetration. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause may make vaginal tissue thinner and more easily irritated. Infection such as chlamydia can inflame the cervix and cause bleeding or discharge. Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and vaginal cancer can also present with bleeding after sex; the symptom does not show which cause is present.

Note whether the blood came immediately or later, whether penetration was painful, and whether you have unusual discharge, pelvic pain, or bleeding between periods.

Book a clinician appointment if this is new, repeats, or has no clear explanation. The visit may include a pelvic examination, cervical screening review, and tests for infections. Avoid sex until significant pain or bleeding has settled, and do not douche or insert products that could irritate tissue.

If a clinician finds an abnormal area on the cervix, they may discuss monitoring or a procedure such as cone biopsy, depending on the findings.

Get urgent help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, faintness, fever, or feeling suddenly unwell. Seek prompt assessment as well if pregnancy is possible and bleeding is accompanied by pain.

Ask whether you need infection testing or cervical assessment, what symptoms should trigger urgent help, and when sex is safe to resume. If results are abnormal, ask what the next test is for.
