How many subcision sessions might be needed?

Subcision releases fibrous strands that pull a depressed scar downward. A clinician first examines whether scars are rolling, shallow, deep, widespread, or mixed with other scar types. Several areas may be treated in one visit, while sensitive or extensive areas may be divided into separate visits. The skin needs time for swelling and bruising to settle before the result is judged, so an early appearance does not predict the final change. Subcision is often more useful for tethered depressions than for narrow ice-pick scars or raised scars.

At a consultation, show the clinician any previous scar treatments, medicines, supplements, history of prolonged bruising, and tendency to form raised scars. Contact the treating clinic if pain is worsening rather than easing, swelling becomes tense or rapidly enlarges, the skin becomes increasingly hot and red, drainage develops, or you develop fever. Seek urgent medical care for facial swelling with trouble breathing, faintness, or widespread symptoms. These findings need assessment and should not be managed by booking another session.

Ask which scars are tethered, what improvement can reasonably be assessed at review, how long to wait before considering another session, and whether laser treatment or another method fits the scar pattern.
