What should you know about subacromial subdeltoid bursitis?

Short answer
Subacromial subdeltoid bursitis is inflammation of a shoulder cushioning sac, often causing pain with lifting the arm and lying on that side.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
The subacromial and subdeltoid bursa helps the rotator cuff and surrounding tissues move smoothly beneath the shoulder roof. Repeated overhead activity, a sudden increase in use or irritation from nearby tissues can inflame it.
What it means
Pain may be felt at the outer shoulder or upper arm and may increase when reaching overhead, dressing or lying on the affected side. Stiffness and weakness can occur because pain limits movement. A clinician may compare shoulder strength and motion and use imaging when another cause needs checking.
Shoulder swelling can reflect several problems. Local swelling, warmth or marked tenderness is worth reporting rather than assuming it is simple bursitis.
What you can do
Reduce painful overhead work temporarily, but keep gentle shoulder movement within a comfortable range. Support the arm during rest and use a wrapped cold pack for short periods if that feels helpful. Medication advice should account for your other conditions and medicines.
A clinician may recommend anti-inflammatory medication when suitable. If pain remains limiting, a cortisone injection can be discussed after diagnosis. Joint aspiration is reserved for situations where fluid needs to be removed or tested; it is not needed for every shoulder complaint.
When to seek care
Get prompt care for fever, a hot or very red shoulder, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain after an injury, new major weakness or inability to move the arm. Arrange an appointment for persistent night pain, recurring symptoms or difficulty with work and daily tasks.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Is the bursa the main source of pain? Could a tendon, joint or neck problem be involved? Which movements should I modify? Would medication, an injection or fluid testing help, and what rehabilitation should follow?

Questions people ask
Can shoulder bursitis cause weakness?
Pain can inhibit shoulder muscles and make the arm feel weak, although sudden true weakness needs assessment for other causes.
Should I keep moving my shoulder?
Gentle, tolerable movement is often useful, while sharp or escalating pain is a reason to modify the activity and seek advice.
