Stye treatment and antibiotics: what to know

A small, local stye often settles with warmth and careful eyelid hygiene. Antibiotics target bacteria, so they are considered only when examination suggests bacterial infection that would benefit from them. A blocked gland or a different eyelid lump may not improve with an antibiotic.

The medicine might be an eye preparation or, in selected situations, a medicine taken by mouth. The choice depends on where inflammation is located, how extensive it is, allergies, other medicines and your medical history. Never use leftover or borrowed eye medicine.

Continue clean warm compresses on the closed eyelid for several minutes at a time, repeat through the day, and avoid squeezing the bump. Wash hands before applying any prescribed treatment and follow the label or clinician’s directions exactly.

Pause contact lenses and eye makeup while the eye is irritated. If an antibiotic is prescribed, ask how long to use it, what to do about a missed application, and whether you should stop if irritation develops. Do not put creams intended for skin into the eye unless instructed.

Seek prompt assessment for fever, rapidly spreading redness or swelling, severe pain, reduced vision, or pain when moving the eye. Urgent advice is also needed if the eye becomes hard to open or you feel unwell.

Book a GP consultation for a persistent or recurring lump, continuing discharge, or uncertainty about whether antibiotics are appropriate. A clinician can examine the eye and choose treatment based on the actual cause.
