Stye swelling under the eye

A stye may begin at the upper or lower lid margin, while fluid and inflammation make nearby skin look swollen, including beneath the eye. The area may feel sore or tight, and blinking can be uncomfortable. Under-eye swelling is not specific to a stye, so its location, speed of change, and accompanying symptoms are useful clues.

Watering, sticky material, or general redness can occur alongside lid irritation. Read about Eye Discharge and Red Eye when those symptoms are present, especially if the redness is spreading.

Use clean hands and place a comfortably warm cloth over the closed eyelid for several minutes. Repeat as tolerated, using a clean cloth each time. Rest with the head slightly raised if puffiness is more noticeable after lying down.

Do not massage forcefully, squeeze the stye, or apply unprescribed products near the eye. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup while the area is swollen. Do not use cold or hot treatments that make the skin painful or numb.

Seek urgent medical assessment if swelling spreads quickly, the skin becomes hot and very red, fever develops, vision changes, the eye is difficult to move or open, or pain is severe. Arrange a GP Consultation when puffiness persists, recurs, or does not fit a small localised eyelid lump.

Ask whether the swelling is limited to the eyelid or involves surrounding tissue, whether an examination is needed, and which compress or medicine is appropriate. Tell the clinician when it began, whether it is spreading, and whether you have pain, discharge, fever, or vision changes.
