Stye on the side of the eye

People may call the outer or inner eyelid edge the side of the eye. A stye in either place can produce a red bump, local tenderness, watering and a scratchy sensation. It develops when a tiny gland or lash follicle becomes blocked and inflamed. The side location alone does not show how serious it is. A firm, less painful lump or swelling that involves the whole eyelid may have a different cause and should be assessed if it remains.

Apply a clean warm compress to the closed eye for several minutes, repeating during the day. Wash your hands before and after touching the eyelid, and gently clean away crust with clean water. Do not press, lance or pick at the swelling. Avoid eye makeup and contact lenses while irritation is present, and do not use another person’s drops or towels. Contact a clinician promptly if the eyelid becomes very swollen, redness extends around the eye, vision changes, moving the eye hurts, or bright light is difficult to tolerate. Fever or feeling ill can signal a wider infection. Sudden vision loss, severe pain or an eye injury needs urgent help.
