Stye on the outer corner of the eye

The outer corner contains eyelid skin, lashes and small glands that help protect the eye. A blocked gland or follicle there can cause a red, sore swelling, watering and tenderness when you blink or touch the area. The bump may develop a pale centre, but it should not be opened at home. Irritation from rubbing, cosmetics or contact lenses can make discomfort worse. If the lump is not clearly at the lid edge, a clinician can examine the eye surface and surrounding skin.

Use a clean warm compress on the closed eyelid for several minutes at a time and repeat regularly. Keep hands clean, avoid rubbing, and gently remove any crust from the lid with clean water. Stop eye makeup and contact lenses until symptoms have cleared, and do not share towels or cosmetics. Avoid squeezing the outer-corner bump. Get prompt advice if redness or swelling spreads onto the cheek, the eye becomes difficult to move, light causes marked discomfort, or vision changes. Fever, feeling unwell, or severe pain also warrants prompt assessment. Sudden sight loss or a serious eye injury needs urgent help.
