What should you know about a stye on the eye for months?

A stye is an inflamed eyelid gland or lash follicle. After the active inflammation settles, a firm, painless lump can remain when oil is trapped; this is commonly called a chalazion. A months-long lump may also be a different eyelid or skin lesion, so duration and appearance should be reviewed rather than guessed from a photograph.

Record its position, size changes, tenderness, crusting and effect on vision. Red eye or eye discharge can be relevant symptoms, particularly if they appeared after the lump.

You can try a clean warm compress over the closed eyelid for about ten minutes, several times daily, followed by very gentle massage toward the lashes. Stop if it causes pain or irritation. Do not squeeze, pierce or try to drain the lump, and avoid eye make-up and contact lenses while the eye is irritated.

Because it has lasted months, book a GP consultation or eye assessment. The clinician may inspect the eyelid, check vision and decide whether observation, prescribed care or a procedure is appropriate.

Seek urgent care for sudden vision loss or change, severe eye pain, painful eye movement, rapidly spreading redness or swelling, fever, or marked light sensitivity. Arrange prompt review if the lump bleeds, forms a persistent sore, causes lash loss, repeatedly returns in the same place or changes in shape or colour.
