Stye near the eye: what to know

The eyelid sits next to several delicate structures, so a small stye can feel more alarming than it looks. A stye, also called a hordeolum, forms near an eyelash follicle or oil gland and may cause a sore red bump at the lid edge. Local tenderness and mild puffiness fit this pattern. Redness that extends beyond the eyelid, deep pain, or difficulty moving the eye is different and should not be managed as a simple stye without advice.

Use clean hands and a clean warm compress over the closed eye for several minutes at a time. Repeat this regularly while it is sore. Avoid rubbing, squeezing, piercing, or massaging forcefully. Do not wear contact lenses or eye makeup until the irritation has cleared, and wash pillowcases or towels that touch the face. If the diagnosis is uncertain, a pharmacist or clinician can examine the lid and recommend an appropriate product.

Seek urgent medical help for any vision change, severe or deep eye pain, pain with eye movement, fever, marked swelling, or redness spreading onto the face.
