Stye and lubricant: what to know

A stye is a focused inflammation near an eyelash follicle or eyelid oil gland. It can make blinking feel scratchy, especially when the lid is swollen. Lubricating drops can moisturise the eye surface when dryness is part of the discomfort, while a lubricant ointment may temporarily blur vision. These products do not treat every red eye, and they may not be suitable if there is discharge or a different eye condition.

Check the label and ask a pharmacist or clinician which product is suitable, particularly if you wear contact lenses. Wash your hands, avoid letting the container tip touch the lashes, and do not share bottles. Use a clean warm compress on the closed eyelid to support natural drainage. Pause contact lenses and eye makeup while the lid is irritated. Do not use leftover prescription drops or someone else’s medicine; treatment depends on what an examination finds.

Get medical advice if pain or swelling increases, the lump repeatedly returns, or symptoms do not start improving. Seek urgent help for vision changes, strong pain, light sensitivity, fever, pain with eye movement, or swelling spreading around the eye.
