Stye in the waterline: what to know

The waterline is the narrow inner edge of the eyelid beside the eye. A stye there may feel like a sharp spot, foreign body, or sore area with blinking. You might see a small red swelling, a pale point, watering, or flakes at the lashes. An inner stye can be less visible but more uncomfortable because it rubs against the eye surface.

Redness or discharge may accompany a stye, but these symptoms can also come from irritation or other eye conditions. Avoid rubbing while you watch how the eye changes.

Apply a comfortably warm, clean compress to the closed eye for around ten minutes at a time. Repeat it through the day and gently clean away loosened crusts with clean water. Use a fresh cloth each time and wash your hands before and after touching the eyelid.

Leave the bump alone: do not scrape the waterline, squeeze it, or try to drain it with a needle. Stop contact lenses and eye makeup until symptoms have cleared. A pharmacist can help you choose suitable comfort measures if needed.

Get prompt medical advice if light hurts your eye, sight is blurred or reduced, the eye cannot open normally, or pain feels deeper than the eyelid. Fever, marked swelling, pain when moving the eye, or redness spreading onto the face needs urgent assessment.

Book a GP consultation if the waterline lump persists, returns repeatedly, or does not respond to warm compresses. An examination can distinguish a stye from lid-margin inflammation or a blocked gland.

Ask whether the bump is on the eyelid margin or the eye surface, whether you should continue compresses, and whether your lenses or cosmetics may be contributing. Tell the clinician about discharge, light sensitivity, recurrent bumps, and any sight change.
