Stye in the top eyelid: what to know

You may notice a sore red bump along the upper lid, a gritty feeling, watering, or tenderness when blinking. The swelling can make the lid feel heavy without affecting vision. A stye can form on the outer lid or on the inner surface of the upper lid; an inner stye may feel deeper and be harder to see. It is different from a painless, firm lump that develops when an oil gland remains blocked.

Mild crusting or discharge can occur. Eye discharge and redness have several possible causes, so their presence does not by itself identify a stye.

Wash your hands, then hold a clean warm compress against the closed upper eyelid for about ten minutes. Repeat this several times during the day, reheating the cloth as it cools. Keep the cloth clean for each use and do not squeeze, pierce, or pull at the bump.

Pause eye makeup and contact lenses until the eye is comfortable and the swelling has settled. Avoid sharing towels, cosmetics, or eye products. If discomfort is significant, ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain relief is suitable for you.

Arrange an assessment if the swelling spreads around the eye, pain is increasing, the eye becomes difficult to open, or vision changes. Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, marked light sensitivity, fever, pain with eye movement, or a rapidly worsening eyelid.

A GP consultation can help when the lump is not improving, keeps returning, or its appearance is uncertain. Do not use leftover antibiotic drops or ointment unless a clinician has advised them.

Ask whether the swelling is a stye or another eyelid lump, whether any treatment is appropriate, and what changes should prompt an eye review. Mention contact lens use, recent eye products, repeated episodes, discharge, and any change in sight.
