Stupp schema for glioblastoma: what to know

Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain tumour whose treatment usually involves more than one discipline. The schema refers to a sequence in which surgery may obtain tissue and remove as much visible tumour as safely possible, followed by Radiotherapy given with a chemotherapy medicine, then further chemotherapy in selected patients. The exact schedule, dose and suitability depend on age, general health, neurological function, molecular findings, residual tumour and recovery after surgery. The schema is a framework, not a promise that every person will receive identical care.

Ask the team to map the proposed sequence onto your own scan and pathology results. Brain Tumour Surgery may be aimed at diagnosis, symptom relief or safe removal. Discuss steroid use, seizure medicines, rehabilitation, fatigue, nausea, blood monitoring and how treatment may affect daily activities. Keep a record of new symptoms and medicines, and ask who to contact outside appointments. Clinical Trials may be relevant at diagnosis or recurrence, depending on eligibility and local availability.

During or after treatment, urgent assessment is needed for a new seizure, sudden weakness or speech difficulty, severe headache with vomiting, confusion, reduced alertness, fever, or a wound that becomes increasingly red or drains.
