What should you know about a stubborn stye?

A stye, also called a hordeolum, usually forms when an eyelid gland or eyelash follicle becomes inflamed. The area may be red, sore, swollen, or crusty, and a small spot of discharge can appear near the lashes. Some eyelid lumps are deeper and firmer; these can behave differently from a surface stye and may linger after tenderness fades.

Avoid squeezing or piercing the lump. Pressure can irritate the eyelid and spread inflammation. A stye is not the same as every cause of red eye or eye discharge.

Place a clean, comfortably warm compress over the closed eye for around ten minutes, several times during the day. Re-warm the cloth as needed, but do not use heat that could burn the skin. Wash hands before and after touching the eyelid, pause eye makeup and contact lenses, and use a fresh face towel rather than sharing one.

If the lump remains, returns, or interferes with daily activities, arrange a GP assessment. Treatment depends on the examination and can include eyelid care or prescription treatment when a clinician finds a reason for it.

Seek prompt medical advice for worsening swelling, redness extending around the eye, fever, marked pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision, pain when moving the eye, or difficulty opening the eye. These features need assessment because inflammation around the eye can require different care from a simple stye.

Ask whether the lump looks like a surface stye or a deeper eyelid blockage, how long to continue warm compresses, whether any medicine is appropriate, and which changes should prompt urgent review.
