What should you know about strongest tens unit?

Short answer
The strongest TENS unit setting is not automatically the most helpful; comfortable stimulation, correct electrode placement, and the cause of pain matter more than maximum intensity.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Best intensity
- Strong enough to feel, comfortable enough to tolerate
- Pad placement
- Use intact skin around, not across, the painful area
How TENS works
A TENS unit sends mild electrical impulses through adhesive electrodes on the skin. People often feel tingling or pulsing, not sharp pain. The sensation may influence how pain signals are processed and can make movement more manageable for some problems. TENS does not identify or repair the source of pain, and a setting that feels powerful may irritate the skin or cause muscle twitching without adding benefit.
Set it up carefully
Read the device instructions and begin at a low, comfortable intensity, increasing gradually only while the sensation remains tolerable. Place pads on intact skin around the painful area, not over broken skin, the front of the neck, the head, or directly across the chest. Keep electrodes away from implanted electronic devices unless your clinician confirms use is suitable. Remove pads if burning, rash, persistent redness, dizziness, or worsening pain develops, and keep the skin clean and dry.
When not to rely on TENS
Get urgent medical help for new chest pain, severe shortness of breath, sudden weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Arrange assessment for pain after major injury, progressive numbness, fever, or pain that repeatedly disrupts sleep. Stop using the unit and seek advice if a skin reaction persists or the device triggers unusual symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Is TENS suitable for the cause of my pain? Where should the pads go? Which settings and session length should I try? Do my implanted devices, pregnancy, skin conditions, or medicines change the advice?
