Strong anti-nausea medicine: what to know

Strong anti-nausea medicine may ease vomiting, but the right choice depends on its cause, other medicines and your health. It can reduce the symptom without treating the underlying problem, so persistent or severe sickness still needs assessment. A pharmacist or clinician can check whether an anti-sickness treatment is suitable.

Nausea can occur with gastroenteritis, food poisoning, gastritis, acid reflux, gallstones, heat exhaustion, hepatitis A or low blood sugar. These conditions need different care. Some anti-nausea medicines act on signals between the gut and brain; others slow gut movement or affect balance. That is why a medicine used by someone else may be unsuitable, especially with pregnancy, heart rhythm problems or other prescriptions.

Take medicine exactly as directed and check whether it causes drowsiness before driving. Sip fluids frequently; if vomiting continues, an oral rehydration drink may be useful. Start with small, plain meals when you can keep fluids down, and avoid alcohol. Do not take leftover or borrowed tablets, and do not hide worsening symptoms by repeatedly increasing the dose.

Seek urgent care for blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, severe or persistent abdominal pain, a stiff neck, confusion, fainting, severe headache, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Heat exposure with weakness or altered alertness is also urgent. Contact a clinician when nausea keeps returning, prevents fluids, or occurs with yellow skin, chest pain or unexplained weight loss.
