Stridor cough sound: what to know

Stridor is a rough, high-pitched sound, often louder when breathing in. It differs from wheezing, which is commonly heard from the chest during breathing out. A barking cough with hoarseness may occur when the upper airway is swollen, while other causes of noisy breathing include [Acute Bronchitis](/conditions/acute-bronchitis/), [Bronchiolitis](/conditions/bronchiolitis/), or an inhaled object. [Asthma](/conditions/asthma/) more often causes wheeze, but an examination is needed to identify the sound accurately.

A cough can also be linked with [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/), [Allergic Rhinitis](/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/), a [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/), or a longer-lasting cough condition. These possibilities do not make stridor at rest safe to watch without advice.

Record when the sound occurs, whether it is during breathing in or out, and whether it changes with rest, crying, exercise, or position. If possible, capture a short recording for the clinician without delaying care. Keep a child calm and upright; avoid smoke and do not force food or drink when breathing is noisy. Arrange medical review for new stridor, recurring episodes, or a cough that is not settling. Treatment depends on the cause, so avoid borrowing inhalers or using leftover medicines.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, inability to speak or swallow, drooling with distress, or marked drowsiness. Seek urgent assessment when stridor is audible while resting, chest muscles are pulling in, or the sound is rapidly worsening. Sudden onset after choking is an emergency.
