Stretch marks during and after pregnancy

As the body grows, skin can stretch faster than its supporting fibres adapt. Marks may develop on the abdomen, breasts, hips, thighs, or other expanding areas. They can be itchy and may appear pink, red, purple, brown, or darker than nearby skin. After delivery, they commonly become lighter and less prominent over time, while a fine change in texture can persist.

Apply a fragrance-free moisturiser for tightness or itch and avoid scratching. Gentle cleansing and comfortable clothing can reduce irritation. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, check any active ingredient with your obstetric or dermatology team before use; postpone elective procedures until they advise that timing is suitable. After pregnancy, a dermatologist may discuss microneedling, fractional laser treatment, RF microneedling, or carboxytherapy, depending on your skin and whether you are breastfeeding.

Contact your maternity or medical team if itching is intense, widespread, or accompanied by a rash, yellowing skin, dark urine, or feeling unwell, because pregnancy-related itching can have causes other than stretch marks. Seek dermatology advice for sudden unexplained marks or painful, inflamed skin.

Ask when treatment is appropriate after birth, whether breastfeeding changes the plan, which areas can be treated, and what recovery and sun protection the procedure requires.
