What should you know about stretch mark removal?

Short answer
Stretch mark removal treatments may soften their colour and texture, but they do not reliably erase every mark.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
A dermatologist can assess whether your marks are newer and reddish or older and pale, because their stage, depth, skin tone, location, and cause can influence the approach. Treatment is usually aimed at making the marks less noticeable rather than restoring untouched skin.
What stretch marks are
Stretch marks, also called striae, are lines that form when skin stretches or changes volume faster than its supporting tissue can adapt. They can appear during pregnancy, puberty, rapid muscle gain, or substantial weight change, and some people develop them because of inherited skin characteristics.
Early marks may look pink, red, purple, or darker than surrounding skin and can sometimes feel slightly raised or itchy. With time, they often become lighter, flatter, and more silvery. They are not contagious, and having them does not mean your skin is unhealthy.
What you can do
Moisturiser can reduce dryness and make the surface feel more comfortable, but creams and oils generally cannot remove established stretch marks. Avoid products that promise complete erasure or contain prescription-strength ingredients without medical supervision.
In a clinic, options may include Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, RF Microneedling, or Carboxytherapy. These work in different ways, such as creating controlled skin stimulation or delivering energy to encourage remodelling. Several appointments may be suggested, and improvement develops gradually as the skin heals.
Discuss pregnancy, breastfeeding, a tendency to form raised scars, active eczema, infection, recent tanning, and medicines that affect healing before treatment. Sun protection after a procedure helps reduce unwanted darkening, especially in skin that marks easily.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical assessment if stretch-like lines appear suddenly without an obvious period of growth or body change, spread quickly, or occur with easy bruising, muscle weakness, facial rounding, or other new symptoms. These features can occasionally point to a hormonal problem or a medicine effect and deserve evaluation.
Seek prompt care for severe pain, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening redness after a procedure. A dermatologist can also check any uncertainty about whether a mark is truly a stretch mark before cosmetic treatment begins.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which treatment is suitable for the age and colour of your marks, what degree of improvement is realistic, how many visits may be needed, and how long skin changes may take to settle. Also ask about discomfort, pigment changes, scarring, aftercare, and whether treatment should wait during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Questions people ask
Can stretch marks be removed completely?
No treatment can reliably erase every stretch mark. Procedures may improve contrast, texture, or both, while the final change varies with the mark and your skin.
Do stretch mark creams work?
Moisturisers may ease dryness, but they usually do not remove established marks. A dermatologist can discuss whether a prescription product is appropriate for your situation.
Are stretch mark treatments suitable during pregnancy?
Some procedures and prescription ingredients should be postponed during pregnancy. Tell the clinician that you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using a product or booking treatment.
