A stress-related lump in the neck

Stress and anxiety can tighten throat muscles and make swallowing feel unusual without creating a mass. Reflux, infection, enlarged lymph nodes, salivary-gland problems, and thyroid changes can also cause pressure or a lump in the neck. A neck lump that can be felt, persists, grows, is firm or fixed, or comes with hoarseness or swallowing difficulty needs examination. Head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, and cancer of unknown primary are possible medical diagnoses, but a neck lump does not by itself identify any of them.

Check whether the feeling appears during stressful moments and eases when you relax, but do not rely on that pattern if a lump is physically present. Arrange a clinical review for a new lump, especially if it remains or changes. Note its location, size, tenderness, movement, and how long it has been there. A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, thyroid, and lymph nodes and decide whether imaging or other tests are needed. Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, choking, or severe weakness. Urgency is based on these warning features, not on stress alone.

Ask whether you have a true mass or a throat sensation, which structures may be involved, and whether the thyroid or lymph nodes need imaging. Ask which changes require urgent review, how long to monitor symptoms, and whether reflux, infection, or muscle tension could be treated.
